Slippery Rock's ladies departed this morning to Niagara University, Niagara, NY, for their second annual attendance at the host's Get Lucky tournament. Leading into the tournament, the odds didn't seem to fare in the Rock's favor. Only sixteen players were able to attend, meaning that there would be one substitute on the sidelines in case of an injury, and almost no chance of fresh legs going in to give a tired player some relief. Two members of the starting lineup were rookies Natalie Truini and Miriam Syed, neither of whom had played a game before. And to top it off, Slippery Rock had only been practicing outside for a week prior to this tournament. The Women of the Rock's first match was against the University of Rochester, whom they were unable to score against. However, during the last ten minutes of the match, the Rock finally gained their composure, and came close to powering their way to a try. The momentum didn't stop there, as Slippery Rock greatly outscored their next two opponents, limiting both Niagara University and Potsdam University to two tries. Tries troughout the day were scored by Marshe Barnes, Nickole Burkett, Lindsey Jeffress, Jenny McLaughlin. Rookies Natalie Truini and Miriam Syed also put two tries each on the board throught the day to score their Zulu Warrior try.
SRU claimed second overall in the tournament, and claimed their championship trophy from last year's event. The Rock returns to action next weekend at the 50th Annual Cherry Blossom Tournament in Washington, D.C.
